DOCTORAL PROGRAM (FULL-TIME)

Overview:

This program is intended to prepare full-time participants for research and teaching positions both within and outside academia. Our doctoral scholars are expected to be specialists in their respective fields and capable of generating new knowledge and be the great new thinkers for our world.

The scholars are expected to develop deep understanding in the areas of research selected by them. They also get a structured exposure to a range of topics, develop various professional skills, and participate in academic and other activities.

Eligibility:

Candidates need to satisfy the following criteria to be considered eligible for doctoral studies in select schools at Xavier University, Bhubaneswar (XUB) as indicated below. For information on the schools please visit the Xavier University, Bhubaneswar homepage https://xub.edu.in . Candidates not meeting the eligibility criteria need not apply to the school in concern.

School Necessary Qualification for Doctoral Studies: Candidates should have
XIMB Master’s or equivalent degree in any discipline with minimum 60% of marks in the Master’s level.
XAHR a. Full time Post Graduate or Master’s Degree from any AICTE / UGC approved institution in Human Resource Management / Psychology / Personnel Management / Labour Welfare / Industrial or Employment Relations / Business Management having at least 55% marks in aggregate.
OR
b. Masters or equivalent degree and UGC NET qualified in Subjects like- Human Resource Management / Psychology / Personnel Management / Labour Welfare / Industrial or Employment Relations / Business Management having at least 55% marks in aggregate.
OR
c. Master’s Degree in any other discipline, from AICTE / UGC approved institutions, with minimum 60% of marks in aggregate.
XSRM MBA or equivalent, One Year PG Diploma in Rural / Development Management, Masters in any specialization the field of Management (e.g., Finance, Marketing, etc.) / Development Studies / Rural Development / Development Economics / Environmental Planning or Management / Public Policy / Public Systems Management / Social Work.
XAHS For Ph.D- Urban Management and Governance: Master’s degree or equivalent in Business Administration / Planning / Urban Design / Urban Development / Architecture / Sustainability / Public Policy / Political Science / Public Administration / Governance or related specializations / Engineering / Technology / Public Health

For PhD-Planning: Master’s degree or equivalent in Planning / Architecture / Urban Design / Urban Development / Geography / Economics / Statistics / Sociology or related specializations
XSOS Master’s or equivalent degree in any discipline with minimum 60% of marks in the Master’s level.
XSOC Master’s or equivalent degree in any discipline with minimum 60% of marks in the Master’s level.
XCOMM Master’s degree in Communication and Journalism / Visual Communication / Communication / Electronic Media / New media / Fine Arts / Advertising and Public Relations / Broadcast Communication / Film Studies / English language and literature, OR a professional Degree in the stream of communication declared equivalent by the corresponding statuary regulatory body.
XCOMP M. Tech. / M.E. / Master Degree in Computer Science / Computer Engineering / Electronics / Telecommunication / Data Science, or MBA / MS with B.Tech in Computer Science / Computer Engineering / Information Technology.

In all these cases, the applicants also need to secure at least 55% marks in aggregate in the Master’s (or an equivalent) level. In case this score is available on a letter-grade system or grade-point system, the University expects a minimum equivalent of 55% marks in aggregate as per the awarding University’s norms for conversion to a percentage.

How to Apply:

Applicants have to fill up the online application form separately for XUB programs at: www.xub.edu.in Upon successfully filling the online application form and paying the application processing fee, the applicant will receive the confirmation by email.

Selection Process:

Candidates will be shortlisted on the basis of their academic records and SOPs. The shortlisted candidates will be required to appear for Xavier Research Aptitude Test (X-RAT), Subject Test (if applicable), Presentation, and Personal Interview to be held in Bhubaneswar. Details about X-RAT is available separately on our website. The coursework for the selected candidates will commence from June 2020.

X-RAT Guidelines :

Xavier Research Aptitude Test (X-RAT) is a test of some basic skills considered essential for researchers, namely writing ability, verbal ability and comprehension, reasoning, and quantitative aptitude.

Subject Test:

Schools shall be conducting a subject test (for domain candidates only) which the shortlisted candidates may need to appear. Details on the test will be communicated to applicants separately.

Candidate Categories:

The candidates who will be offered admission into the doctoral program will be classified in two categories:

  • Category I (Domain Candidates): These candidates have the requisite domain-level qualification as given in the table below (received within the last 5 years) at the time of admission.
  • Category II (Other Candidates): These candidates are applicants who do not meet the requirements of Domain Candidates as documented below

For PhD-Planning: Master’s degree or equivalent in Planning / Urban Design / Urban Development or related specializations.
XSOS Master’s degree in Sustainability Management / Environmental Science / Social Works.
OR
Master’s degree in Engineering / Technology (Biological Sciences and Bio-Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering).
XSOC Master’s degree or equivalent in Accounting / Finance / Marketing.
Professional qualifications such as CA, CMA, CFA, and CS shall be an added advantage.

Duration of the Program:

The Ph.D. students are expected to complete the program in 4 years after doctoral registration (please refer to the table below). It may be extended with due approvals.

  • Category I (Domain Candidates): The first year will be spent on doctoral coursework, and the remaining years for completing subsequent steps leading to the doctoral thesis.
  • Category II (Other Candidates): In the first year, the students will be required to attend the domain-related master level courses that are prescribed by the School Research Committee. The doctoral coursework will commence from 2nd year onwards.

Doctoral Coursework:

The coursework is organized in three phases (Phase-I, Phase-II, Phase-III). The coursework will broadly involve the following courses as given in the table below. Additionally, workshops will be organized as per requirements.

Comprehensive Qualifying Examination:

The Comprehensive qualifying examination will be conducted after the successful completion of doctoral course work. After successful completion of the comprehensive qualifying examination, the student will be allowed to proceed to the Thesis Phase.

Thesis Phase:

This phase will involve working on the thesis proposal till final submission of thesis. The scholar is conferred the title as given below on successful completion of all the requirements of the thesis.

Any extension of time beyond the expected completion duration as noted above will be based on review of progress status of the scholars in concern. Students failing to comply with the program requirements will be de-registered. A student has to meet all the requirements of the Doctoral Program according to prescribed standards and no exemption will be granted for any reason whatsoever.

Financial Support:

Based on the results of the admission process, “University Sponsored” scholarship of 30,000 INR per month will be provided to scholars joining the program, subject to the information that they are not in recipient of any other financial support from any other sources. The scholarship will be given for a duration of 4 years from doctoral registration.

Accommodation:

The students will be provided accommodation on campus for free. However, the mess expenses as per actuals will have to be borne by the students themselves.
