Candidates need to satisfy the following criteria to be considered eligible for doctoral studies in select schools at Xavier University, Bhubaneswar (XUB) as indicated below. School Necessary Qualification for Doctoral Studies: Candidates should have
XIMB PGDM/MBA qualification and first division throughout the academic career.
XAHR a. Master’s degree in Human Resource Management/ Labour Welfare/ Personnel Management/ Industrial Relations/ Labour and Social Welfare/ Business Management/ Psychology/ Law or related disciplines.
b. Master or equivalent degree AND UGC NET qualified in Subjects like- Labour Welfare/Personnel Management/Industrial Relations/Labour and Social Welfare/Human Resource Management.
XSRM MBA or equivalent, One Year PG Diploma in Rural/Development Management, Masters in any specialization the field of Management (e.g., Finance, Marketing, etc.)/ Development Studies/ Rural Development/ Development Economics/ Environmental Planning or Management/ Public Policy/ Public Systems Management
XUMG Master’s in architecture, Engineering, Planning (any stream such as Urban, Regional, Transportation, Environmental, Housing etc.), Urban Design, Geography, Economics, Public Policy, Political Science, MBA or equivalent, Finance, Public Systems Management.
XSOS Master or equivalent degree in any discipline
XCOMM Master’s degree in Communication and Journalism/Visual Communication/Communication/Electronic Media/New media/Fine Arts/ Advertising and Public Relations/Broadcast Communication /Film Studies/English language and literature, OR a professional Degree in the stream of communication declared equivalent by the corresponding statuary regulatory body.
XSC Post-graduate / MBA with specializations in accounting, finance or marketing. M.Phil. or professional qualifications like C.A. / CMA / CS shall be an added advantage.

In all these cases, the applicants also need to secure at least 55% marks in aggregate in the Masters (or an equivalent) level. In case this score is available on a letter-grade system or grade-point system, the University expects a minimum equivalent of 55% in aggregate as per the awarding University’s norms for conversion to a percentage.

Applicants have to fill up the online application form separately for XUB programme at: Upon successfully filling the online application form and paying the application fee, the applicant will receive the confirmation by email.

Selection Process:

Candidates will be shortlisted on the basis of their academic records and SOPs. The shortlisted candidates will be required to appear for Xavier Research Aptitude Test (X-RAT), Subject Test, Presentation, and Personal Interview to be held in Bhubaneswar. Details on X-RAT is available separately on our website. The coursework for the selected candidates will commence from July 2019.

X-RAT Guidelines

Subject Test: Some of the schools may conduct a subject test which the shortlisted candidates need to appear. Details on the test will be communicated soon.

Duration of the Programme:

The Ph.D. students are expected to complete the program in 5 years. The first year of the program will be spent on coursework and the remaining years for completing subsequent steps leading to the doctoral thesis.

Coursework and Registration:

The coursework has been organized in 3 phases during the 1st year of the program. The students are required to complete the course-work requirements successfully (pass mark is 60% in aggregate for each phase, and 55% in individual papers). Following that, the students are required to deliver specific research seminars related to their research objectives. On successful completion of all, the student then presents the thesis proposal seminar. After the successful completion of this seminar, the student’s Ph.D. topic will be registered with Xavier University, Bhubaneswar (XUB).

Programme Fee:

a) Officially/Self Sponsored Candidates: In case the organization supports the student’s PhD or the students decide to sponsor themselves, the year-wise fees will be as follows:

  • Rupees three lakhs in the first year; and
  • Rupees one lakh in each year from second year onwards.

b) Full Scholarship Category: In case of a deserving full-time student, the academic fee will be waived.


The students will be provided accommodation on campus, if available. The residential expenses will have to be paid by the students separately as per the prevalent rate (current rate is 42,000.00 INR per year, double seated), and mess expenses as per actual. Students can also choose to stay off-campus.
