The doctoral program (Full-Time) at Xavier University, Bhubaneswar is a research degree that qualifies the holder to teach at university level, or to work in a specific profession. This is a Full-Time program which implies that the candidate will need to be in campus and engaged full time on doctoral program requirements.

The Doctoral Program (Part-Time) is quite similar with the Full-Time program with some added pre-qualifications besides the Eligibility; e.g.

  1. At least three years of full-time work experience after obtaining the qualifying degree in executive/ managerial/ teaching/ research field(s) from an organization of repute as on March 31, 2021.

What is the BASIC ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA for admission to the Doctoral Program (Full-Time) at Xavier University, Bhubaneswar?

A candidate seeking admission into the doctoral program (Full-Time) needs to select the school where she/he intends to specialize. The necessary qualification requirements for admission into the doctoral program at the school of choice are mentioned in the table below (Table-3):

In all these cases, the applicants also need to secure at least 55% marks in aggregate in the Master’s (or an equivalent) level. In case this score is available on a letter-grade system or grade-point system, the University expects a minimum equivalent of 55% marks in aggregate as per the awarding University’s norms for conversion to a percentage.

The eligibility for Doctoral Program (Part-Time) is quite similar with the Full-Time program with some added pre- qualifications besides the Eligibility (Table-3); e.g.

Those candidates who will not satisfy the stated criteria at the time of admission above are classified as Other (Category-II) candidates.

How is the Ph.D curriculum different for a Domain (Category-I) Candidate vis-à-vis Other (Category-II) Candidate in the Doctoral Program (Full-Time)?

The Domain (Category-I) candidates after joining the Ph.D program shall start with the doctoral coursework. However the Other (Category-II) candidates after joining the Ph.D program will need to attend the domain-related master level courses that are prescribed by the School Research Committee during the first year in the program. The doctoral coursework will commence from 2nd calendar year onwards.

Eligible candidates selected into the program can apply to the school research committee for waiver for course(s). Waiver is not automatic, one has to apply for waiver only after one has joined the Ph.D program.

In case a candidate wants to change the school / area after submission of the Ph.D application form, she/he will need to communicate the request to the Admissions Office by March 15, 2021. Additional details may be requested by the Admissions Office from the candidate. Requests received after the deadline may not be entertained.

Change in area after joining the Ph.D program shall follow rules documented in the manual of policies.

Selected candidates will be notified by email and letter individually. The status will be made available from the first week of May (tentative).

Candidates will be shortlisted for the initial round on the basis of their academic records and Statement of Purpose (SoP). In the final round, the shortlisted candidates will be required to appear for Xavier Research Aptitude Test (X- RAT), Subject Test (if applicable), Presentation, and Personal Interview to be held in Bhubaneswar.

The venues of the Ph.D admission process are the academic campuses of Xavier University, Bhubaneswar. The addresses of both the campuses are available on our website www.xub.edu.in

 

You are requested to plan and make your own arrangements regarding travel, arrival and stay etc.

 

Note: Exact venue of the Ph.D admission process will be communicated via email in due course.

The Ph.D admission process dates are finalized well in advance and is notified on our website. If there is any change in those dates, that is duly updated. It is not possible to arrange any other procedures pertaining to Ph.D admission on other dates based on personal requests.

A Statement of Purpose (SoP) is what you want to learn about, in your research project. In the SoP the candidate will need to outline his/her research plans and interests. This is very essential as it is one of the parameters for shortlisting in the initial round of selection. The length of this content needs to be between 300-500 words.

X-RAT is the Research Aptitude Test conducted by Xavier University, Bhubaneswar as a part of the Ph.D admission process. The test is used to assess some basic skills considered essential for researchers, namely writing ability, verbal ability and comprehension, reasoning, and quantitative aptitude.  The total marks for the test is 100 and the total time allocated is 2 hours and 30 minutes. The test is conducted in Xavier University, Bhubaneswar premises (Old Campus and/or New Campus).

There is no need to apply separately for X-RAT. Candidates will be required to take this test as a part of the Ph.D admission process. The test consists of the four sections as indicated above. The questions are subjective and objective types. Yes, the X-RAT test is mandatory for those who are willing to join the doctoral program at Xavier University, Bhubaneswar.

A candidate may be exempted from writing the X-RAT examination if she/he had written the exam within the last 3 years and was shortlisted (selected) for admission to the Ph.D program. For applying for exemption from X-RAT, the candidate will need to send an application to the Admissions Office (by March 15, 2021) and enclose all the relevant details. This will be reviewed and the decision by Associate Dean (Admissions) will be considered final which will be communicated back to the candidate.

 

A candidate may be exempted from writing the subject-test examination (specific to a school) if she/he had written the exam within the last 3 years (for the same school) and was shortlisted (selected) for admission to the Ph.D program and in the same school. For applying for exemption from subject-test, the candidate will need to send an application to the Admissions Office (by March 15, 2021) and enclose all the relevant details. This will be reviewed and the decision by Associate Dean (Admissions) will be considered final which will be communicated back to the candidate.

 

In case the candidate is exempted from writing X-RAT and/or Subject-Test, she/he will still be required to appear for the other components of the Ph.D admission process.

The subject test will explore the domain knowledge of the candidate in the chosen school of specialization. Those, who are domain candidates will be required to appear for the subject test.

 

There is no need to apply separately for the subject test. All domain candidates will be required to take this test as a part of the Ph.D admission process.

 

The test is expected to consist of questions of the subjective and objective nature. The exact details of the test for example, syllabus, test duration, test syllabus, test instructions, etc. will be communicated to the candidates separately from the admissions office.

Yes, all candidates will be required to give a presentation during the Ph.D interview process. During the presentation, you are expected to present your research plans and interests.

 

For the presentation you may use PowerPoint slides or you may simply use the blackboard. In case you want to make a PowerPoint presentation, please communicate the same to the admissions office latest by March 15, 2021. Please refrain from using any other software or audio-visual aids as necessary support will not be provided.

 

You will be given at least 10 minutes for delivering the presentation. Any additional communication related to presentation instructions (if any) will be sent separately from the Admissions Office.

No, you need to carry the presentation in some storage drives (e.g. pen-drive/flash-drive). We suggest to have an online back-up in your Drive / Cloud storage / Email etc., so that you can retrieve the data in case of requirement.

Candidates who are working currently can apply, however, for joining the program:

  1. They have to quit the job (before joining) and join the doctoral program on the date given after serving any notice period (as relevant)

           OR

  1. They will need to avail leave/sabbatical for at least the expected duration of the Ph.D program (which will need to be extended if the candidate is unable to complete the thesis requirements by that deadline)

After joining the program they need to be resident in the campus and engage Full-Time with the doctoral requirements till they successfully complete the requirements of the doctoral program.

Yes, international students interested in joining a doctoral program can also apply. The eligibility requirements are the same as for domestic students.

No, there is no provision to defer the admission. The conditions for accepting the admission offer will be mentioned in the offer letter.

Yes, hostels are compulsory for all the students admitted to the Ph.D Full-Time program in Xavier University, Bhubaneswar.

There are separate residences for gents and ladies. The mess is managed by a student’s committee and serves both vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals. The X-Café provides a variety of fast food to the students who work till late night. The facilities at Xavier University, Bhubaneswar include 24-hour internet connectivity through the latest Wi-Fi technology, laser printing and photocopying machines, multi-purpose hall, co-operative store, book club, washing machines, water coolers, geysers, telephones, televisions, uninterrupted power supply, different indoor games space, a campus doctor, nurses, 24×7 ambulance for medical emergency, CCTV surveillance, security people for safety, bank branch and ATM machines etc.

There are more than 130 Full-Time faculty members in Xavier University, Bhubaneswar, apart from a big pool of eminent Part-Time and visiting faculty from academia and industry.

No. However, a Ph.D student may seek employment after submission of the thesis, with the concurrence of his/her thesis advisory committee.

Right now there’s no provision for such accommodation.

Candidates, who are placed in the waiting list, need to indicate acceptance of the waitlist by a specified deadline. Candidates not providing the acceptance by the deadline specified will be removed from the waitlist. Accordingly, the actual waiting list movement is maintained from time to time.

Doctoral registration is the official registration of the candidate into the doctoral curriculum. For Domain (Category-I) candidates, doctoral registration will take place at the time of admission into the Ph.D program. For Other (Category-II) candidates, doctoral registration will take place once they successfully complete the domain- related master level coursework (1st year) with the qualifying marks.

What are the important stages in the Ph.D program at Xavier University, Bhubaneswar?

The stages starting from the doctoral coursework are presented below. For Category-II (Other) candidates, they will need to go through the domain related master level coursework during the 1st year and successfully complete the coursework requirements before they can proceed to the doctoral coursework level.

 

Doctoral Coursework (duration: 1 year):

The coursework is organized in three phases (Phase-I, Phase-II, Phase-III). The coursework will broadly involve the following courses as given in the table below. Additionally, workshops will be organized as per requirements.

Comprehensive Qualifying Examination: The Comprehensive qualifying examination will be conducted after the successful completion of doctoral course work. After successful completion of the comprehensive qualifying examination, the student will be allowed to proceed to the Thesis Phase.

 

Thesis Phase (expected duration: 3 years): This phase will involve working on the thesis proposal till completion of thesis research. On completion of the thesis research, the candidate submits the thesis and then defends the same.

A research topic requires interest and motivation of the Ph.D student and availability of a suitable expert (faculty member of Xavier University, Bhubaneswar) interested in the area of specialization. Based on preliminary interests, the Ph.D student may explore who are the faculty members from the school who may also be interested in the concerned area of specialization, and then can approach the concerned faculty member. The Ph.D student will need to engage with the concerned faculty member in understanding the area of specialization while she/he prepares for the domain review seminar. Subsequently the guide is registered and the Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC) is constituted with whom the Ph.D student will need to work towards their thesis.

Ph.D students are encouraged to present papers, which have been submitted to and accepted at professional conferences. Xavier University, Bhubaneswar will provide support to the Ph.D student to attend such conferences subject to certain terms and conditions.

A Domain (Category-I) Candidate is expected to finish the Ph.D requirements in 4 years from admission while Other (Category-II) candidates will be given one more year. Maximum time allowable to submit the thesis is 6 years (for Category-I candidates). Category-II candidates will be given one more year.  These extensions are not automatic but contingent on the progress status and performance assessment of the Ph.D student.

Ph.D Full-Time students joining the program are awarded a “University Sponsored” scholarship of 30,000 INR per month (after doctoral registration) provided they are not in recipient of any other financial support from any other sources. The scholarship will be given for a duration of 4 years from doctoral registration.

The Career Advisory Services of Xavier University, Bhubaneswar are not available to the Ph.D students. The Ph.D students around the time of completion may apply to different organizations/institutes on their own or in consultation with the guide or the thesis advisory committee.

The Ph.D program at Xavier University, Bhubaneswar offers a mix of flexibility and rigidity to the students. A candidate will be required to select his/her school and area of specialization at the time of admission which becomes the primary research area for the candidate. Xavier University, Bhubaneswar encourages Ph.D student to engage in multi-disciplinary and cross-disciplinary research based on the candidate’s’ interests and scopes of contributions which may be visible during the doctoral research journey. The guide and the thesis advisory committee are expected to facilitate the knowledge pursuit.

It is not mandatory. However, a Ph.D student will be allowed to work as a Research and Teaching Assistant (RTA) thereby assisting faculty members in their area of work. They may also be engaged in teaching if such an opportunity exists. A suitable honorarium will be paid to the Ph.D student for such engagements. All these appointments shall follow the rules and regulations specified by the University.

This is achieved through a structure that has proven to be very effective for starting and developing a research and teaching career related to the domain of specialization – a structure that comprises of rigorous course work followed by supervised dissertation research. It forms an essential requirement for seeking a position in academia. Our past students are currently working in some of the best academic institutions in the country.

The selection is school specific and entirely depends on the candidate’s performance. There is no lower limit. The upper limit is as per the number of seats available for admission in the doctoral program – Full-Time for Ph.D-2020 batch as given in the table below

What about the accommodation and mess provisions for Ph.D students in Xavier University, Bhubaneswar?

For Ph.D Full-Time program the students will be provided accommodation on campus for free. However, the mess expenses as per actuals will have to be borne by the students themselves.

 

For Ph.D Part-Time program the students will be provided accommodation on campus for the first 2 years. The residential expenses will have to be paid by the students separately as per the prevalent rate, and mess expenses as per actual.
